Erratum: The author of the Washington County feature (“Washington County: From Ice Age to Space Age“) in the spring 1980 issue of Pennsylvania Heritage (Vol. VI, No. 2), has pointed out an error which appeared on page 7, in the first para­graph of column 3. The figures indicating the number of oil wells drilled and those actually productive, refer to the state as a whole, not simply Washington County. The county did, however, produce 1,100 barrels per day, as indicated.

 

The University of Pennsylvania Press is pleased to announce the establishment of the John L. Haney Prizes for distinguished works of scholarship accepted for publication by the press in the humanities and the social sciences. Two prizes, each in the amount of $5,000, will be offered every two years, one in humanistic and one in social-scientific studies. The first two prizes will be awarded for books published or accepted for publication by the press in 1980 and in 1981. The contest is not limited to works of scholarship by members of the University of Pennsylvania faculty, but is open to all scholars without limitation of academic or other affiliation. The Victorian Society in America welcomes proposals for thirty­-minute slide presentations on Public Buildings of the Nineteenth Century, the topic for the society’s ninth annual Autumn Symposium. This conference will be held in Philadelphia, October 22-25, 1981, and will explore the architecture, interiors and preservation of nineteenth-century American public buildings.
